Botticelli to Braque: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland highlights 55 outstanding masterpieces from Scotland’s premier art collections—the Scottish National Gallery, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, Scotland. The works included are by some of the best-known and well-loved European and even American artists and span more than four hundred years of art history, from the Renaissance to the modern age. Artists represented include the Renaissance masters Titian and Veronese; the seventeenth-century painters El Greco, Velázquez, Van Dyck, Hals, Rembrandt, and Vermeer; such nineteenth-century figures as Pissarro, Degas, Monet, Sargent, Gauguin, and Cézanne; celebrated Scottish painters Ramsay and Raeburn; and modern artists such as Picasso, Vuillard, Derain, Bonnard, Matisse, and Ernst. All of the artworks are fully illustrated and described with thorough entries by the curatorial staff of the Galleries. A foreword by Kimbell director Eric M. Lee details the development of the exhibition and is followed by a brief history of the National Galleries of Scotland in which Michael Clarke, director of the Scottish National Gallery, discusses the evolution of the Scottish national collection over the last 150 years.
